    Arrival of Steel fram Japan
  • The first transport ship (Zen Hua 5) left Japan on January 4, 2003.
  • The ship arrived in the Bay Area on January 24, 2003.
  • The ship carries 8 of 24 total deck sections.
  • The next two ships are schedule to arrive in late February and mid March.
 
Steel Deck Dimensions
  • The steel sections vary in size from 79 to 163 feet long and weigh an average of 600 tons each.
  • The deck is 95 feet wide and will accommodate 3 lanes of mixed flow traffic, a carpool lane, two 10 foot wide shoulders and a bike and pedestrian lane.
  • This is the first steel orthotropic deck suspension bridge built in the U.S..
 
Deck Erection Procedures
  • The first deck section well be lifted into place on Friday, January 31, 2003.
  • The deck sections will be lifted directly from the transport ship on strands hanging from the main cable.
  • Strand jacks are mounted on the deck and take roughly 4 hours to crawl up the strands until they reach the proper elevation.
  • Ironworkers connect the deck to the permanent suspender cables already hung from the main cable.
 
  • On the North Side ( Vallejo ) and in the middle of the strait some sections will be "swung" into place using controlled diagonal strand jacks that will slowly move the sections that are not directly over the water after they have been lifted into position.
  • On the South Side (Crockett ) specil skids were constructed that will literally "walk" the deck sections into place on top of the trestle constructed from the shore to the bridge tower.

    Completion Dates

  • The deck erection phase of construction should be complete by the end of Spring
  • The project estimated cost is $220,000,000.
  • Steel Deck Erection cost is $17,200,000.
